A control journal is a very helpful tool that FlyLady developed to help us organize our day. In a control journal she has us list our routines and other important information. Control journals are also very helpful for our kids. Often our kids have difficulty with organization, which creates increased stress for them and makes everything that they do more difficult. Having an overall view of their day can decrease stress and increase their independence as they are not relying on us having to tell them what to do or what comes next. Control journals are also a way to help our kids transition between environments during their day when we are not there to help them. Every kid is different, and therefore, one control journal will not “fit all.” For each of my sons, we have a one page “control journal” which is portable and can transition with them throughout their day. For one of my sons, the one page control journal is part of a larger binder system which he calls his “survival guide” but this would be far too complicated of a system for my other son. In order to keep the terminology the same so that no one feels slighted, we call the portable part of the survival guide a control journal. One of my sons relies on pictures for his control journal as he doesn’t read, while my other son has no difficulty in this area, and just has his activities listed…again one size does not fit all. The control journal needs to fit the needs of your child.
